Ieoh Ming Pei is probably the greatest Chinese architect, whose ancestry is Su Zhou. His father is a co-funder of the Bank of China. Pei moved between HK and Shanghai before learning Architecture and teaching in Harvard University. Being discovered by Root Astoria, the famous real estate mogul from New York, is the turning point inPei's career. His early works are mostly commercial residency until he designed the National Center for Atmospheric Research, which marked his switch to public buildings. Later in 1970s, the east wing of the National Gallery and Kennedy Library made him a master in architecture in the U.S. He is also called the last modernism master architect.

Pei's favorite building materials, concrete, glass and steel, can be easily found in his representative works, such as the Fragrant Hill Hotel and Hong Kong's landmark, the Bank of China Tower. In 1989, Mitterrand, the French president at that time, personally commissioned Pei to be in charge of the expansion project of the Louvre. The controversial glass pyramid in the courtyard of the Louvre drew global attention. Later in his career, Pei attempted to express "Unity of Man & Nature", which concentrated on the connection between building and nature. The Miho Museum is a typical work. Pei won Pritzker Prize in 1983 and was awarded the Medal of Freedom by president Reagan.

Pei is 97-year old this year. As a specialized architect, Pei's influence on Architecture theory is mainly seen through his works, instead of his relatively fewer treatises. The German Historical Museum, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, JPMorgan Chase Tower and New Suzhou Museum are all his prestigious works.
